The Nubian Rights Forum, a human rights organization advocating for the rights of the Nubian ethnic minority in Kenya, has been officially registered as an NGO. This landmark achievement comes after years of hard work and dedication by the NRF team and its partners in promoting social transformation and empowerment of the Nubian community.
Founded in 1997 as a human rights movement, NRF has since grown to become a fully-fledged NGO with a full mandate to agitate for the community’s rights countrywide. The group operates from Kibra, Nairobi, but has a wide network in Nubian settlements across the country, enabling it to effectively reach out to the marginalized minority and promote their interests.
The NRF’s focus has been on promoting social transformation and empowerment of the Nubian ethnic minority. Its institutionalization of the planning process and shift in orientation from civic education to paralegal work has been key to its success. The organization assists the community in acquiring identity documents such as birth certificates, national identification cards, and passports, which are vital tools in fighting for other rights such as education, land rights, seeking loans, and employment opportunities.

e in acquiring identity documents. This program, in partnership with the Kenyan Department of Civil Registration, has conducted three successful mobile birth registration campaigns in Kibra, Nairobi, with the support of UNHCR, Namati, and the Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI).
The NRF has several objectives, including promoting education, encouraging the community to protect the environment, assisting in community development, advocating against injustices, helping the youth, establishing programs that facilitate drug abuse and HIV/AIDS containment, and sensitizing the community on matters arising.
