SECURING THE LAND RIGHTS OF THE NUBIANS RESIDING IN KIBOS

The Nubian Community in Kibos, Kisumu County, has asked the new administration to assist them in obtaining title deeds to the land on which they live. The Nubian Rights Forum, along with Kibos Nubian community leaders, met with Kisumu County Commissioner Madam Josephine Ouko to discuss the resettlement plan for the evictions that occurred two years ago.

Members of the community stated that they have lived on the same plot of land for the past 35 years. Over 3500 people were displaced two years ago when Kenya Railways demolished their homes as part of a mission to reclaim stolen land across the country.

However, the court ruled in their favor, and the residents were finally told to return to their land, where they rebuilt their homes from scratch. We urge the Kisumu County Government’s Department of Lands to intervene and work to permanently resettle the Nubian community following demolitions on February 5, 2021. Since the court allowed them to return to the land following evictions and demolitions, the only thing left to do is issue the title deed to ensure that this does not happen again.
